October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence and supporting survivors in our community. At Harbor House, we are committed to breaking the cycle of abuse by providing safe shelter, critical resources, and compassionate support to those affected. This month, we invite everyone to join us in spreading the message that help is available, and no one should have to face domestic violence alone. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, we strive to empower survivors and create a future where everyone can live free from fear and violence. Read on to see how you can get involved!
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Harbor House will be actively participating in community events across Kankakee and Iroquois counties, and we invite you to visit us! In addition to being at local community gatherings, we’ll be hosting a variety of special events, including Their Story, an interactive activity that delves into the experiences of survivors, our annual Candlelight Vigil, a poignant evening dedicated to honoring those affected by domestic violence, and a webinar focused on polyvictimization with expert Myra Strand. These events provide opportunities to learn, reflect, and take action in support of those affected by domestic violence. Learn more, pick up resources, and discover how you can get involved in supporting survivors. By connecting with us at these events, you’re helping to raise awareness and support our efforts to create a safer, more compassionate community. We look forward to seeing you and standing together for this important cause.
Take a stand against domestic violence by participating in Purple Thursday during Domestic Violence Awareness Month! On this special day, we encourage everyone to wear purple as a symbol of support for survivors and a commitment to ending domestic violence. To make an even bigger impact, consider purchasing apparel from our fundraiser. Not only will you be showing your solidarity, but your purchase will also help fund vital services and programs for those affected by domestic violence in our community. Let’s turn the town purple and send a powerful message that we are united in the effort to create a safer future for all. Be sure to take pictures of you and your loved ones wearing purple and tag Harbor House on Facebook—we’d love to see and share your support! Join us in raising awareness—wear purple, spread the word, and support the cause by getting your apparel today!
Show your support for survivors and help raise awareness during Domestic Violence Awareness Month by displaying a free yard sign from Harbor House. These signs are a simple yet powerful way to spread the message that our community stands united against domestic violence. By placing a sign in your yard, you’re not only showing solidarity with survivors but also helping to educate others about the importance of this issue. Together, we can create a visual statement of hope and support that reminds everyone that help is available and no one is alone. Stop by Harbor House to pick up your free yard sign at 430 W Merchant St, Kankakee (9 a.m. 4 p.m., Monday-Friday) OR at the Harbor House Resale Shoppe during regular business hours.
Join us in standing united against domestic violence by signing Harbor House’s Pledge for the Day of Unity on October 7 for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We invite organizations, businesses, and community leaders to commit to fostering safe and supportive environments for survivors. By signing the pledge, you are making a powerful statement that your organization is dedicated to ending the cycle of abuse and promoting a culture of respect and safety. Together, we can amplify our voices and take meaningful action to create lasting change. Stand with us in solidarity!
